Personal Experience with Hair Loss Led to the Inception of Carter Hair Academy.
I started to lose my hair at 18 years old. When I was growing up, I had a full thick head of hair. Hair loss wasn’t something that I ever thought I would worry about. By the age of 18 and while going to college, I started noticing that my hair was coming out in clumps day and night. I immediately sought the help of a dermatologist.
At first I tried Rogaine. The dermatologist recommended that I use 5% Minoxidil AKA Rogaine. I started applying the solution daily to my scalp for a period of 3 months. Toward the end of the 3 months period, I noticed hair loss has slowed down and my hair had stopped falling. I even noticed some small hair coming out. But, that wasn’t enough. I needed thicker, stronger and healthier head of hair.
Then, I tried Nioxin. As I am doing my research to fight hair loss and get my hair back, my barber recommended that I use Nioxin shampoo (which was supposed to help regrow the hair back.) I used Nioxin products religiously every day. To my disappointment, my hair started falling even faster this time. Nioxin wasn’t working. I decided to seek professional help from my family doctor.
I started taking Propecia. My family doctor suggested that I take Propecia (Finasteride) (The Only Drug Approved by the FDA to actually stop Hair Loss). I started taking the 1mg pill on a daily basis. After a couple weeks, I noticed the shedding had slowed down. I was hopeful and very excited. Three months later, my hair was the same and there was no significant hair regrowth. By this time, my hair was thin everywhere, my hairline had receded significantly and it was very noticeable that I was balding.
Camouflage Option 1: Comb Over. First, I let my hair grow longer and started to do the comb over. This approach worked for a while. But, I knew that with the rate that my hair was falling that I will not have any hair to comb over in a matter of months. At this point, I was ready to do anything to save my hair. After all, I am 20 years old and I could not live without hair. My hair was going down the drain and so was my confidence.
Camouflage Option 2: Hair Pieces. I heard from one of my friends, that there was a place in town called the Hair Club for Men and Women. He recommended to visit with them and that they will help me. I immediately made an appointment and went to visit with them. I initially did not know what was it that they do. During my one-hour visit at the club, the hair specialist recommended to shave whatever left of my hair on top and start wearing a toupee (Hair-piece). I told the hair specialist that I will get back to her and left right away. I was 20 years old and I wasn’t going to wear a toupee. I knew right off the back that this option was not going to get me my hair back. If anything, it was going to make me lose more hair even faster.
Camouflage Option 3: Hair Transplant. In desperation, I made an appointment with a hair Transplantation clinic to see what they could do for me. During my two hour visit with the Hair Transplantation Surgeon, I come to learn about their so called Micro Grafts Solution. They wanted to move hair from the back of my head and implant it on the top. Within minutes, I knew that this wasn’t something I was going to do. I realized very quickly that moving hair from the back to the top is not going to stop the rest of my hair from falling out. I was in need of a solution not a camouflage.
The Solution: Low Level Laser Light Therapy. During my quest for a permanent solution to my hair loss, I came across a Low Level Laser Light Therapy that was used in Europe to stimulate the hair follicles and grow the hair back. I took the summer off from college and traveled to Europe to try this laser therapy. It was like an expensive vacation but I was at a point where I did not care about money. All I wanted was my hair back naturally and at any price. To my astonishment, my hair stopped falling and new hair was coming out. Within six weeks, 90% of my hair came back. I purchased the equipment and brought it with me for use at home.
